Disaster Planning
Hurricane season is fast approaching. You should have a disaster plan in place for your business, and it should be updated annually. At a minimum, make sure that you have a printed copy of calendars, and up to date contact information on your employees. Have printed copies of any deadlines for the next month and a ready supply of cash. You need to plan ahead in case you are without electricity for a period of time. If you are fortunate enough to have multiple work locations, make sure that each one can operate independently. If one site is going to be down for a period of time, you can have employees report to the alternate facility. If you don't have multiple offices you should plan ahead for this also. Check out temporary places to work and make arrangements for this contingency. Have a current back-up of your electronic data and take it off site. Telecommuting can be utilized for those who have computers at home and who can connect to the office. Cross training is also critical, as some may not be able to get in to the office. Those who are able to get to the office need to have the essential skill sets to keep you operational. Designate essential personnel and have drills to test their knowledge. Allow the essential personnel to prepare their homes ahead of time as they will be the ones to make sure the office is secure. Emergency supplies - make sure you have flashlights, first aid kits, water and batteries on hand at the office in case employees get stranded at work. Useful Websites:
